Ver originalShould the German market leader be worried about this all-new Polestar?! Get 20% off Car Vertical using code Carwow: https://www.carvertical.com/carwow Meet the all-new @Polestar 5! It’s an all-electric performance GT that has class leaders like the @Audi e-tron GT & @Porsche Taycan in its sights! The question is, does the Polestar offer enough to steer you away from the more established, best-in-class @Tesla Model S that Germany has to offer? Let’s take a closer look… In terms of the design, there’s no denying it has some real presence on the road. Up front, it comes with split headlight elements that really help it look menacing. You’ll find some fake vents at the front, although there’s a large vent across the bottom of the bumper that can close when the battery doesn’t need cooling. The safety sensors have also been well hidden, to further improve the looks. Along the side, there are contours on the doors to add more definition, coupled with frameless windows. The pop-out door handles may not be to everyone’s taste, but thankfully, both the front and rear doors have soft-close. Around the rear, the futuristic design cues continue, and the main statement here is a lack of a rear window! On the inside, you’ll find similar Scandinavian minimalism as found in other Polestar cars - but that’s no bad thing! There are soft-touch, high-quality materials throughout the cabin, and the centre console is dominated by a large vertical infotainment screen. There are no physical buttons, so everything is managed through the screen, but thankfully the system is crisp and quick to use. The digital dials are easy to manage with buttons on the steering wheel, which is of a good size. It also comes with damped, high-quality stalks on either side. The Polestar 5 comes with some serious power. All options come with two motors, with the entry-level being able to produce 748hp. If you choose the Performance version, this output is significantly boosted to 884hp! It’s powered by a 106kWh battery, and the Performance edition has a range of 416 miles. But of course, all of this performance and power doesn’t come cheap. The Polestar 5 starts from £89,000, rising to £105,000 for the Performance edition. However, the car we’re reviewing here, with all options added, costs £117,000! So would you really choose one of these over a Porsche? Let us know in the comments! Putting the rear view mirror into "Mirror mode" so it can be used as a mirror. Revolutionary.
1It's over 2m wide. It's wider than our EV9, which is an absolute pain the arse to park in places. You need to start doing multi storey carpark tests with these.
1The car's speedo will overread by about 3mph, so it stops timing when it thinks it's doing 60mph but it's really only doing 57, whereas Mat's specialist timing gear stops at a true 60mph which comes a fraction of a second later.
1490km range with journalists going full throttle regularly is pretty damn good, I think. Who wants to drive more than 4 hours before stopping for a stretch? I bet it charges fast too. I have a 2022 Polestar 2 LRDM with 350kW and the range is only about 300-400km depending on the conditions and even that is fine 99% of the time. It's only when I go on road trips that I need to stop more often and it's usually quite nice to stop somewhere and walk around for a bit.
1It "was" engineered in the UK. Before Polestar made all of their UK R&D employees redundant, that is.
1I'm just glad that some manufacturers are making saloons. I despise SUVs, no one needs them on the road (off road is different)
1Maybe it's personal taste, but the Swedes are good at designing smart looking cars with relatively minimal aesthetic. Although I do doubt people buying expensive, sporty, performance saloons these days wants minimal and cool. Those buyers probably want presence, a statement with design features...something a bit more extroverted in nature.
1Those rear seats looks like my old volvo 480. It was a Turbo but it was not a quick nor a quality car.. it had Pop up head lights tho
1Saw two Polestar 5s in July 2025 at my hotel when I was staying for work not far away from the Nürburgring. It made me take a look at Polestar again. Since December I'm now driving a Polestar 4.
1If ever it was needed to demonstrate the folly of a touch screen - here it is. The inability to access modes and basic functions without entering a screen and scrolling and "touching" different menus to operate virtually anything, is extremely dangerous. And this isn't the fault of Volvo/Polestar - pretty much without exception all manufacturers are the same. It's just an excuse to polish their "technology" credentials.
1884 hp, £117k, no rear window and no physical buttons. We’re not designing cars anymore, we’re deleting things faster.
1The difference in the times is because cars on the road typically display a slower speed than they are going. So the car thinks its hitting 60mph when its probably only going 58 or 59. Anyone whos been driving with Google or Apple maps will have noticed this speed difference.
