Previous editions of the BMW X5 have been an evolution of the prior model. However, it’s fair to say the newest X5 is more of a revolution than an evolution! There’s a whole host of changes to this car, both inside and outside. But do all of these changes make it a better car? Well, let’s take a closer look to find out, starting with the design… From the front, the new X5 is a whole world away from the previous edition. One of the most notable features is the introduction of X-shaped DRLs, with these sitting on either side of a thin, illuminated kidney grille. There’s a large, wide front bumper, and the bonnet comes with a central crease, similar to the new 7 Series. Along the side, the X5 sits lower than the previous car, and if anything, has a cleaner look & feel. Traditional door handles have been swapped with those like on a @Ferrari Purosangue, and around the back you’ll find tail lights that almost stretch across the entire length of the car. There’s a sloping roofline, and surprisingly, despite being the petrol-powered car, there are no exhaust tips on show! The inside of the new X5 introduces the same infotainment and passenger screens as found in the new 7 Series. The dashboard is dominated by both, with the new infotainment system being crisp, clear and easy to use. The car also comes with BMW’s all-new Panoramic iVision system - a thin screen which runs along the base of the windscreen. Elsewhere, the cabin is mostly covered in soft-touch materials, and the all-new steering wheel is chunky and feels good to use - although we think it could do away with the plastic elements within it. In terms of engines and batteries, the new X5 has five propulsion choices: Petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric and hydrogen! However, here in the UK, there are only three options. The first is diesel power, with a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that delivers 313hp and 670Nm. Then we have the plug-in hybrid petrol, which has the same size engine as the diesel plus an electric motor. These combine to produce 612hp and 800Nm, and it offers up to 63 miles of electric range. Then finally we have the EV, which has dual motors, a 140kWh battery, and 578hp. It also has a claimed range of up to 497 miles. In terms of price, the cheapest of the X5 range is actually the iX5, with a starting price of £85,375. Following that is the entry-level diesel, which will set you back £85,885. Having to go to the touch screen to move an air vent is ridiculous. The designers have lost it.

Not a fair comparison - the G05 doesn’t have the M sport and M Sport Pro packages vs the new G65.

Premium SUC but in stead of getting high quality buttons, we are getting cheap touchscreens. It is all so wrong.

Very dumb how they threw away the dial-operated infotainment for a touchscreen-only system

For me personally, the interior and exterior design choices are horrific. I was considering a BMW. Not anymore.

Matt, that’s an unfair comparison. You took the basic G05…Of course, it looks worse than a new one in the top‑of‑the‑line configuration.
