For over a century, the steering wheel was a large, round wheel for one simple reason: drivers needed physical leverage to turn the wheels. But what happens when that mechanical constraint disappears completely? For Alain Favey, Peugeot’s CEO, it was the catalyst to ask a radical question: why keep the steering wheel round if you no longer need to? In this interview, Alain Favey reveals the visionary thinking behind the Hypersquare® and why Peugeot has chosen to democratise steer-by-wire technology for the many, not just the few. While steer-by-wire has guided aircraft for forty years and quietly appeared in ultra-luxury vehicles, Peugeot’s role has always been to make breakthrough innovation accessible. That is why the Hypersquare will make its production debut not on an expensive concept, but on a compact city car: the all-electric e208 launching next year. Alain Favey hopes that by putting steer-by-wire into the hands of millions of everyday drivers, Peugeot will be remembered as the brand that shapes the next twenty years of automotive history. The result is captured in four simple words: minimum gestures, maximum pleasure. By removing the upper and lower arches of the traditional rim, the Hypersquare radically opens up the driver’s field of vision, giving an unobstructed view of both the road and the panoramic display.
